Service to others
Last October, my friends and I went to a nursing home because our school held a service event for the community. This event also taught all students of SMP Santa Maria to be responsible and to do good for others, and I took part in it.
However, I first asked for permission not to join because I had something to take care off. In the end, I attended the presentation with my friends, but I wasn’t included in the activity because I didn’t participate. So I changed my assignment and helped take care of the children at the daycare and assisted Mrs. Lugi with cooking and washing dishes.
I eventually carried out this task to replace the service activity at the nursing home. Niko and I happily helped Mrs. Lugi and took care of the children at the daycare. Then we gave a presentation to Mrs. Christine and also did a reflection. I felt very happy because I was able to help others and make people happy through my actions. I was also glad that I could take care of the younger children at the daycare.
We also chatted with Mrs. Lugi while laughing together, and then we ate together. Our dishes on the first day were stir-fried water spinach, sweet and sour fish, and tofu my favorite meal. Then I washed my plate and helped Mrs. Lugi again by peeling carrots, frying eggs, and boiling vegetables to make nasi uduk for the daycare children. We went home at 15:10 to rest.
On the second day, I helped Mrs. Lugi wash the dishes as usual. After that, Niko and I fried fish and crackers and fried eggs again to prepare food for the daycare children. Our tasks were finished for the second day, and we ate together with Mrs. Lugi and the workers there. The dishes were fried rice, basreng, and semur jengkol. We went home at 15:10.
We continued on the third day, which was the last day of service in the daycare and in Mrs. Lugi’s kitchen. I washed the dishes as usual and helped her fry basreng, cook cabbage, and peel carrots. While waiting, we laughed and talked together. When the food was ready, it was served to the daycare children. After finishing our tasks, Niko and I ate together with Mrs. Lugi. The dishes were sweet soy tempe, chicken, and boiled cabbage. I felt sad because I had to say goodbye to Mrs. Lugi, as I had talked with her and Niko every day for the past three days. Finally, we said our goodbyes and went home at 15:05.
